University of Reading

 

The University of Reading is among the UK’s top universities, with a world-class reputation for the quality of our teaching, research and links to business, and a proud history of innovation and social influence that stretches back over 125 years. The University of Reading is ranked #1 in the UK and #12 in the world for agriculture and food, based on quality of research, teaching and impact. Expertise extends across the whole food value chain from crop and livestock production, agri-environmental systems through to food processing and animal and human nutrition. A key focus is understanding the impact of diet, particularly on cardiovascular and brain health. Expertise also covers social sciences including the psychology of consumer behaviour and food security. In addition, Henley Business School is the one of the oldest business schools in the UK and is part of the University, delivering programmes to students and professionals at every stage of their life in the business world.

The University has a long-standing and international reputation for integrative, interdisciplinary research across the whole food chain; to understand how interventions can be optimised to sustain and improve the provision of safe, healthy and nutritious food for consumers. The Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health brings together expertise across the University to support multi-disciplinary collaboration. The University has an extensive range of dedicated food laboratories, enabling us to support our collaborators with access to state of- the-art facilities and technical services, including: a farm with large dairy herd and experimental metabolism unit; the international cocoa quarantine centre and plant research facilities; human nutrition trials facilities, with body composition and brain imaging scanners; large suite of in vitro gut models, representing the gut microbiome under various physiological and pathological states; a sensory science unit and a food processing plant.

The Centre for Food Security joins together existing areas of research excellence to provide a platform for real-world research into the challenges of ensuring global food security. The Centre collaborates with policy makers, industry and the global research community to help ensure resilient, sustainable and healthy food chains. Reading has an international reputation for research and training on food chains and health, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity. It has adopted three strategic headline themes, all of which are relevant to this programme:

  • Securing and sustaining societies, by thinking across conventional boundaries, drawing on multiple disciplines to develop solutions that reflect human behaviour as well as scientific progress.
  • Educating 21st century lives, by focussing on building skills and resilience outside of traditional specialisms.
  • Advancing policy and practice, by advancing government policy, changing business practice and engaging the public, for the better.


University of Hohenheim

 

The University of Hohenheim is a leading University in agricultural and food sciences. It provides great opportunities for students to choose their study program within three faculties: Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business, Economics and Social Sciences. Among others, the University offers several master programs linked food systems, in particular, MSc in Organic Agriculture and Food Systems, MSc in Food Science and Engineering and MSc in Bioeconomy.

The University is very active in its research. There are three research centers at the University: Research Center for Bioeconomy, Research Center for Global Food Security and Ecosystems, and Research Center for Health Sciences. An interdisciplinary approach helps to bring together scientists from different research areas that contributes to solving global challenges. The University pays much attention to the expansion of its international networking with numerous partners from all over the world applying a holistic approach in carrying out large national and international cooperation projects. In its fundamental-oriented and interdisciplinary research, the University aims to contribute to sustainable development of production systems.


University of Turin


The Università degli Studi di Torino (UniTo) is one of the largest Italian Universities, with about 80.000 students, 3.900 employees (academic, administrative and technical staff), 1.800 post-graduate and post-doctoral research fellows. Research and training are performed in 27 Departments, encompassing all scientific disciplines.

According to ARWU international ranking, in 2018 UniTo ranks among the top 300 universities out of 1.200 and as the second university in Italy. With reference to the most recent national evaluation of the Italian university system (VQR 2011-2014), UniTo is ranked in the top three Italian universities in nine scientific areas out of 16. 

As for internationalization, UniTo is involved in about 600 cooperation agreements with institutions all around the world (South America, Mediterranean countries, India and China, in addition to Europe), including joint educational programs at undergraduate and doctoral level.

UniTo manages roughly 500 projects per year, both at the national and international level. The long record of participation of UniTo in the EU strategic research agenda results from 115 FP7 funded research projects, among which 33 coordinated projects, 5 ERC grants as host institution and 4 Research Infrastructures projects.

Under H2020, 113 projects have been funded so far (2014-present), among which 27 coordinated projects, 7 ERC and 9 Research Infrastructures grants. UniTo is the only academic core partner of the EIT Food Knowledge and Innovation Community based in Italy, being involved in 31 EIT Food funded projects so far (2017-present).  


Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, SP


The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is a Spanish public university established in 1968, during one of the most ambitious educational reforms in Spain, which took place during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Throughout its history, UAM has been one of most prominent higher education institutions in Spain and has been recently ranked as the best University of Madrid and one of the two Spanish universities among the 200 best in the world, according to the QS 2021 Ranking. It is also the Spanish university that has more researchers among the most cited according to the Thomson Reuters ranking citation in 2011. 

Since 1971, the university main campus is located in Cantoblanco, 15 km north of Madrid with an extension over 2,200,000 m². UAM has approximately 28000 students and offers 53 official Undergraduate Degrees, 114 MAs and PhDs and 14 Dual Degrees in collaboration with other universities. 

UAM integrates eight faculties and schools that support and coordinate most of the university academic and administrative activity, being affiliated to several institutions as well (in Madrid): La Salle College, Red Cross Nursing School, Jiménez Díaz Foundation Nursing School and La Once School of Physiotherapy.  

UAM receives around 1500 international students every year, bringing over 532 exchange opportunities with 52 countries. UAM is the only Spanish university listed in the Top 150 Most International Universities in the World ranking. According to EU data, UAM is the 6th university in Europe in percentage of outgoing Erasmus students. 

IMDEA Food 

The IMDEA Food Institute, one of the seven Madrid Institutes for Advanced Studies (IMDEA), is a public research centre founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government. The goal of the Institute is to generate science of excellence in the field of Food on which to provide solutions to social problems and to contribute to a knowledge-based economic model capable of generating high added value.  

The mission of the IMDEA Food Institute is to generate scientific knowledge of excellence in the field of Food, to improve the quality of life of the population and to contribute to the development of an economic model based on the creation of value from technological knowledge-based innovation.  

The Institute’s hallmark is the study of the relationship between genes and nutrients with special emphasis on the prevention and treatment of non-communicable chronic diseases through precision nutrition.  

IMDEA Food implements its research lines through the strategies and tools of nutritional genomics, in fields such as cancer, ageing, obesity and cardiometabolic diseases.

Grupo AN is the largest producer of cereal in Spain and is also highly active on national and international wheat, barley, corn, rape and sunflower markets.
